Thank you so much for your time today, Dr. Hammad. Really, really great to see you, as always. Could you start by telling us about yourself, your background, and your training?
Thank you very much for having me. I’m a consultant endocrinologist working at King’s College Hospital Dubai. I specialize in managing various endocrine disorders, including all types of diabetes, thyroid disorders, hormonal imbalances, and obesity. Over the years, through my training in the UK and consultant posts after that, I have gained valuable clinical experience, and I’m passionate about delivering patient-centered care. I’m also actively involved in teaching, training, and research, which allows me to stay up to date with advancements in the field of endocrinology and also mentor future healthcare professionals.
Could you tell us a bit more about your specialist areas of interest within your practice?
Within endocrinology, we deal with a wide range of endocrine or hormone-related issues. I’m particularly interested in hormonal imbalances affecting both genders and different age groups from adolescents and up. This can include polycystic ovarian syndrome and issues around fertility. For these kinds of hormonal issues, I go through their past medical history, look at their previous lab work quite diligently, and then assess the true dynamics of their hormonal imbalance to come up with the treatment plan, which we agree on with the individual patient.
I also specialize and have a particular interest in the management of obesity, which is quite a major issue these days, particularly in the Middle East. I have multiple cases where people have lost significant weight, and that has transformed how they work, how they function, and their daily activities. That’s quite inspiring for me as a physician and beneficial to patients. Hormonal problems are quite complex; they have a number of connections in the body. Certain hormones might be influenced by other hormones and then influence hormones downstream.
So it’s always better to understand the whole dynamics of the hormone, understand the patient sitting in front of you, and then come up with a tailored care plan that will suit that individual, rather than just using a generic sort of treatment protocol.
Why did you decide to relocate to Dubai?
I moved to Dubai from the UK about a year ago. I was drawn to the region’s dynamic healthcare environment and the opportunity to work in a globally diverse setting. The UAE, and in particular Dubai, offers such a unique platform for professional growth and opportunities, with world-class medical facilities. One of them is King’s College Hospital, where I can contribute to advancing endocrinology care.
How has your experience been so far in Dubai?
From a professional side, my experience has been quite rewarding and exciting. In Dubai, we have a very diverse and dynamic healthcare system, which allows us to work with various professionals from other specialties. I enjoy the collaborative environment where I’m working in a multidisciplinary team, which helps to enhance patient care. From my personal perspective and from my family’s side, we enjoy the vibrant lifestyle we have here; the diversity of the culture and the favorable work-life balance have been really positive influences on our personal lives.
