What is the Saudi conjoined twins separation program?
The Saudi Separation of Conjoined Twins Program, which began in 1990, has established the kingdom as a global leader. It is known for highly complex surgeries to separate conjoined twins, offering hope to families worldwide.
The Saudi Conjoined Twins programme, the largest of its kind globally, is open to all, regardless of race, nationality, or religion. Sponsored by the Saudi government, it covers all the expenses of surgeries, treatment, and postoperative rehabilitation. Additionally, it hosts the parents of twins coming from abroad throughout the period of medical care.
Over the past 34 years, the Saudi conjoined twins separation program has evaluated 139 sets of conjoined twins from 26 countries across 3 continents. They have successfully separated 61 pairs of conjoined twins to date. Surgeries are carried out at King Abdullah Specialized Children’s Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, or sometimes at other government sector hospitals in the kingdom.
Separation of conjoined twins is one of the most complex surgical operations. This is especially true in cases where the twins share vital organs, involving long operating hours and often requiring multiple procedures.
The Saudi Conjoined Twins program is led by a distinguished pediatric surgeon, Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabiah. He is an adviser to the Saudi Royal Court and supervisor general of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSRelief) and includes a large, experienced, multi-disciplinary team. This team includes expert Saudi doctors involved in research, scientific publications, and presentations in their field.
Saudi Arabia to host first International Conjoined Twins Conference
In November 2024, the first-ever International Conference on Conjoined Twins is set to be held in Riyadh. It is organized by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief).
The conference will bring together experts from medical and humanitarian fields specializing in separating conjoined twins from around the world. It aims to shed light on the success stories and challenges of conjoined twin separation. Furthermore, they will discuss best practices, provide recommendations, and establish cooperative partnerships.
The conference will be held in conjunction with World Conjoined Twins Day, recently adopted by the United Nations at the initiative of Saudi Arabia, on 24th November.
